Non-substantive film - A special color reversal film process, in which the film itself contains no color couplers; they are added later at the processing stage. This adds to the complexity of the processing. The only current non-substantive film is Kodachrome, and few laboratories are equipped to handle the process, known as K-14. The advantage, however, is that the emulsion is thinner when exposed and the dye can be spread more evenly, giving less graininess and very good resolution. Kodachrome dyes are also very long-lasting.
